Liverpool transfer news: Naby Keita handed No 8 jersey after Reds officially announce signing of midfielder

LIVERPOOL have handed Naby Keita the prestigious No 8 jersey after the club finally unveiled the signing of the midfielder.

The Reds agreed a £48million deal with RB Leipzig in August, with the 23-year-old spending the rest of the season with the Bundesliga club.

But the Guinean international is ready to take the Premier League by storm, and has revealed how legend Steven Gerrard surprised him at Melwood last year.

Speaking to the club’s website, he said: “It was an incredible day for me. He gave me the No.8 jersey. When it happened, it was a surprise and I didn’t expect it.

“When he came in, I looked and him and said, ‘wow’ because he is a legend. He is somebody who always showed respect, who gave his all on the pitch, somebody who is loved here.

“If somebody like that gives you his shirt number, it’s not to play around with, it is to try and do as much as he did – that’s my motivation.”

The No jersey had been vacant since Gerrard left the club for LA Galaxy at the end of the 2014/15 season.

Keita will likely partner Fabinho in the middle of the pitch – after the Brazilian international joined from Monaco for £44m at the end of May.

He added of his switch: “When you see how they performed last season it makes me want to do the same and to be a part of this team. I would like to be able to achieve a similar kind of season with them next season – but even better.

“I chose Liverpool because it is a team I watched often – and I also spoke a lot about it with Sadio [Mane]. He told me a lot about the team and the club.

“I also spoke with the coach, who told me about the project for the team and that motivated me to be here.”

Keita spent two seasons with Leipzig after joining from sister-club Red Bull Salzburg in June 2016.

He immediately established himself as one of the top midfielder’s in Germany – helping the newly-promoted side to second spot.

Chelsea duo Lucas Piazon and Tomas Kalas set to join Fulham in £8m permanent deal

Chelsea duo Lucas Piazon and Tomas Kalas set to join Fulham in £8m permanent deal

FULHAM are set to make Chelsea’s Lucas Piazon and Tomas Kalas their first signings since winning promotion back to the Premier League.

The pair, who both spent the past two seasons on loan at Craven Cottage, will cost Fulham a combined £8million.

Kalas and Piazon both played as Fulham secured promotion back to the Premier League with a 1-0 win against Aston Villa at WembleyRex Features

Neither were able to make their mark at Stamford Bridge, with Kalas making just two league appearances in his eight years at the club and Piazon only one in a seven-season stint.

Czech centre-back Kalas was loaned out seven times, and said in one interview: “I am a player for training sessions. If they need a cone, they put me there instead.”

Piazon joined from Sao Paulo in his native Brazil in 2011, spending time at Malaga, Vitesse, Eintracht Frankfurt and Reading before arriving at Fulham.

According to the Daily Star, both players will now end their troubled time at the Bridge, with Fulham looking to keep together much of the same team that brought them back to the top flight.

Brazilian forward Piazon made 58 appearances in his two years on loan at Craven Cottage, scoring 12 timesRogan/JMP

Piazon and Kalas were crucial elements of the team that secured promotion through the play-offs in 2017-18, making a combined 61 appearances in all competitions.

Fulham could also make a move for fellow loanee Aleksandar Mitrovic, who hinted he was looking to leave Newcastle United this summer having been frozen out by manager Rafa Benitez.

Mitrovic scored 12 times in 17 regular-season games for Fulham after joining in January, describing his spell with them as “the best three and a half, four months of my career.”

Fulham lost right-back Ryan Fredericks to West Ham earlier this month, and Chelsea are rumoured to be circling over manager Slavisa Jokanovic too, with Antonio Conte’s future still uncertain.

Slovenian Jokanovic, an outsider for the job should Conte be sacked, was touted by Blues winger Pedro as an excellent candidate for the role.

He told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser: “We know there might be some changes.

“We know he (Jokanovic) is a great manager.”

Fulham secured a return to the Premier League last month after four years away, overcoming Aston Villa 1-0 in the Championship play-off final after being pipped to automatic promotion by Cardiff City.

FC Dallas takes down Impact for fourth straight win

FRISCO, Texas — Mauro Diaz scored and FC Dallas beat the Montreal Impact 2-0 on Saturday night for its fourth straight victory.

Montreal’s Matteo Mancuso put Dallas up 1-0 with an own goal in the fifth minute. The ball ricocheted off his head when a teammate attempted to clear Diaz’s indirect free kick with his own header.

"We scored an own goal and then a penalty. It was an unlucky night, but we have to do something more to win games for sure," said Mancuso.

Dallas was initially ruled offside on the play, but after video review, the goal stood when Montreal was determined to have made first contact. Diaz scored for Dallas (14-7-1) in the 18th minute on a penalty kick after Maxi Urruti drew a penalty on Rudy Camacho in the box.

"We looked sharp in the first half. We could have scored a few more goals with the chances that we had," said Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja. "In the second half, the ball was with Montreal more. We knew it. We started dragging a little.

Montreal (4-11-0) nearly avoided the shutout when Mancosu banged a shot off the post from the right side of the box at the 50th minute just before halftime. The Impact have scored just once in their last five contests.

"There is a lot of disappointment and frustration in the locker room from my players and from me," said Impact hea coach Remi Garde. "We deserved at least to score a goal, we touched, twice, the bar and the post. We were quite unlucky we conceded two goals on set pieces."

LAVAL, Que. – Pierre-Rudolph Mayard’s acrobatic goal in injury time lifted AS Blainville to a 2-1 win over the Oakville Blue Devils on Wednesday in the first leg of the qualifying round of the expanded Canadian Championship.

Blainville had a corner kick in the 92nd minute that an AS forward volleyed toward the net but Oakville goalkeeper Matthew George blocked.

The rebound was kicked at again, bouncing off the crossbar before Mayard launched himself into the air, using a bicycle kick to drive the ball into the net from in close.

Mitchell Syla had given Blainville an early lead, but Anthony Novak tied it up for Oakville before the half.

Oakville, the League 1 Ontario champion, and the Quebec club champion AS Blainville are playing in a new two-legged qualifying round.

The Oakville home leg will be on June 13 at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan.

The winner faces the USL’s Ottawa Fury FC in the second qualifying round, with defending Canadian and MLS champion Toronto FC awaiting the victor. The Montreal Impact play the Vancouver Whitecaps in the other semifinal.

The Canadian champion gets to hoist the Voyageurs Cup and earns a berth in the CONCACAF Champions League.

Blainville, which clinched the 2017 Quebec title with three matches remaining, currently sits atop the PLSQ standings with a 4-0-2 record. Mayard leads the league with six goals.

The debut of the Canadian Premier League in 2019 will further expand the Canadian Championship field.
