Ibrahimovic scores twice in Galaxy win over Whitecaps

CARSON, Calif. – Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored in each half in the Los Angeles Galaxy’s 3-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night.

The Swedish star opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the fourth minute, finishing into the lower left corner. Romain Alessandrini drew the foul against Marcel de Jong.

The Galaxy (12-11-8) made it 2-0 in the 58th minute when Ibrahimovic drove in from 40 yards out, faked out defender Aly Ghazal and sent home a right-footed blast from the top of the box. It was Ibrahimovic’s 20th goal of the season.

Alessandrini converted a penalty kick in the 77th minute to cap the scoring for LA.

The Whitecaps (11-12-7) dropped their third in a row.

Ronaldo sees red in Juventus Champions League debut

Lionel Messi netted a hat trick for Barcelona against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday, so you could rest assured that Cristiano Ronaldo would have wanted to put on a show in his return to Spain on Wednesday.

The refereeing crew for the Champions League Group H fixture between Juventus and Valencia had other ideas, though, sending off the Portuguese superstar for what they believed was an attempt to strike defender Jeison Murillo’s head.

Ronaldo was trying to escape from the defender for a cross, and Murillo fell to the ground after a minor tangle. Offended by the attempt to dive, Ronaldo confronted the Valencia player which set everything off.

After German match referee Felix Brych consulted with his linesman, he walked over to Ronaldo and issued the red that immediately sent the 33-year-old into tears.

As with most things Cristiano Ronaldo, Twitter was set alight after No. 7 was sent off.

Who is Douglas Costa, why did Juventus star get sent off against Sassuolo, and how long has he been banned for?

DOUGLAS COSTA hit the headlines for all of the wrong reasons this weekend.

The Juventus winger was sent off against Sassuolo for his shameful actions as his team scraped a 2-1 win.

Why was Douglas Costa sent off?

Douglas Costa was given a red card for spitting at, headbutting and elbowing Federico Di Francesco.

After getting into a tussle with the 24-year-old, he elbowed him and appeared to spit into his mouth from a foot away.

He then headbutted Francesco, before he was initially shown a yellow card.

Costa was then sent off the field after the officials consulted VAR.

The 28-year-old spat in the mouth of his opponentSky Sports How long has he been banned for?

The length of his ban is yet to be confirmed.

But Juve boss Max Allegri has claimed that he will be fined and given a “long” ban for his inappropriate actions.

He fumed: “It’s only right that he is fined, and he certainly will be.

“I was surprised by his reaction. We have suffered a goal, a red card and a suspension which will be long.”

The Juventus star will be fined by his club for his actionsReuters

It is expected that the ban will be for a minimum of three games.

In 2015, former Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse and ex-Manchester United defender Jonny Evans were given seven and six-game suspensions for spitting.

He has since apologised to the fans and his team-mates for his “misleading reaction”.

Costa posted: “I would like to apologise to all of Juventus fans for this misleading reaction in today’s game.

“I also apologise to my team-mates, who are always with me in good times and bad.

“I was ugly, I am aware and I apologise to everyone for it.

“I make it clear that this isolated attitude does not match what I have always shown in my career.”

Girona OKs planned La Liga game vs. Barcelona in U.S.

MADRID — Girona is willing to play a regular-season game against Barcelona in the United States as part of La Liga’s goal of promoting soccer and the league in North America, the small club said Thursday.

Girona said in a statement it is working with the league and Barcelona to finalize details of the proposed game, which has attracted criticism from Spain’s players’ association and some clubs and fans.

The league last month announced its plan to play in the U.S. as part of a new 15-year partnership with sports and entertainment group Relevent, which operates the International Champions Cup, a tournament played during the European off-season in July and August across the globe.

La Liga had not said which teams would be involved, nor when or where the game would be played, although Miami appears to be the first option.

Girona said it accepted the proposal because it sees a "great opportunity for expansion" for the club and the city, which has a population of about 100,000 people and is located a little over an hour by car from Barcelona in northeastern Spain.

"A little over three years ago the club was fighting for its survival and now our goal is to consolidate ourselves in the first division," it said. "This action would be another step toward showing our will to remain competing in soccer’s elite."

Girona said one of the issues being discussed was how to compensate the club’s fans as it would be relinquishing a home game in the league. The club said it would try to offer several options for its members so they would not feel at a disadvantage.

Spanish media said one of the plans was to charter planes so Girona fans could make the trip to the U.S. and watch the game.

This is Girona’s second season in Spain’s first division.

Captains of the first-division clubs were against the league’s "unilateral decision" to take league matches outside of Spain, saying they should have been consulted in advance.

The clubs and La Liga are expected to seek approval from Spain’s soccer federation in the next few days.

Quagliarella’s stunning goal leads Sampdoria past Napoli in Serie A

ROME — Fabio Quagliarella’s airborne back-heel volley against Napoli is already in the running for Serie A goal of the season.

The former Italy striker athletically flicked the ball into the far corner to complete Sampdoria’s 3-0 win over visiting Napoli on Sunday.

In the Genoa club’s first home match since 43 people were killed in the Morandi Bridge collapse in the port city last month, Quagliarella’s goal prompted celebrations inside the Luigi Ferraris stadium.

Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli, meanwhile, will need to figure out a better approach after falling behind early for the third consecutive match — even though it came back to win its first two.

Gregoire Defrel scored twice for Sampdoria in the first half, with Quagliarella playing a part in both goals.

A minute’s silence was observed before kickoff to honour the victims of the Aug. 14 bridge collapse, which occurred during a fierce storm.

Napoli dropped three points behind perfect Juventus.

OTHER RESULTS

Marco Benassi scored his third goal in two matches as Fiorentina beat Udinese 1-0 to remain perfect through two matches — with its postponed opener at Sampdoria to be made up later this month.

Kevin-Prince Boateng scored the opener as Sassuolo topped Genoa 5-3; Lazio beat Frosinone 1-0 in a regional derby with a goal from Luis Alberto; and Spal dropped its first points in a 1-0 loss at Torino, where Nicolas Nkoulou scored after the break during a match that was suspended for an hour due to heavy rain.

Also, Nicolo Barella scored before the break to give Cagliari a 1-0 win at Atalanta; and Chievo Verona drew 0-0 with Empoli.
