Sadio Mane agrees to new long-term deal with Liverpool

LIVERPOOL, England — Senegal forward Sadio Mane agreed to a new long-term contract with Liverpool on Thursday.
The length of the deal was undisclosed by the English Premier League club, but media reports suggested it would run until 2023.

Mane joins fellow strikers Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in signing new contracts in the last six months.
"I am very happy to extend my time at Liverpool," Mane said. "It is a great day for me and now I am looking forward to helping the club achieve our dreams and, especially, to win trophies. I have made the best decision in my career."
Liverpool, which is second in the standings, visits Watford on Saturday.
"I can’t think of a single club anywhere in Europe that wouldn’t want a player like Sadio," manager Juergen Klopp said. "He is such an important member of our team and squad. He radiates joy and I think this is reflected in his performances and impact on the pitch."
Mane joined from Southampton on a five-year contract in 2016. He has scored 40 goals in 89 appearances for Liverpool.

Dutch beat France, Germany relegated in UEFA Nations League

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands — When the Netherlands beat Germany 3-0 last month the score flattered the Dutch. Ronald Koeman’s resurgent young team beat France 2-0 on Friday and this time the margin of victory flattered the French.
The rampant men in orange, driven forward by the pinpoint passing of midfielder Frenkie de Jong and given a creative spark in attack by Memphis Depay’s trickery, could have scored five. Only a string of saves by France captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris managed to keep the score respectable for the recently crowned world champion.
The Dutch victory relegated Germany from the top tier of the new UEFA Nations League, a second humbling this year after Germany crashed out of the World Cup at the group stage four years after winning the tournament in Brazil.
Now the Netherlands, which didn’t even qualify for the last World Cup or the 2016 European Championship, needs just a draw against Germany on Monday in Gelsenkirchen to win League A Group 1.
"This was a complete match at the very highest level," said Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman, who has in a matter of months turned an underachieving team into a European force to be reckoned with. In its last three matches, the Netherlands has beaten Germany 3-0, drawn with top-ranked Belgium 1-1, and outclassed France.
"I want to congratulate this Dutch team," France coach Didier Deschamps said. "They played a very good match. They had a lot of quality."
Midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum scored just before halftime and Memphis Depay converted an audacious stoppage-time penalty as the Dutch overran the world champion.
France tried to play a waiting game, sitting back and hoping to launch speedy 19-year-old striker Kylian Mbappe on the break. But led by midfielder De Jong and centre back Virgil van Dijk, the Dutch not only dominated possession, but also shut down the World Cup star.
"It is exceptional how he reads the game," Koeman said of De Jong.
The result left the Dutch one point behind France in League A Group 1 ahead of the group’s final match, between the Netherlands and Germany on Monday, when Joachim Loew’s team will be playing only for pride.
Wijnaldum broke the deadlock just a minute before halftime with his 10th international goal in his 52nd appearance for the Netherlands.
Depay doubled the lead with a "Panenka" penalty in stoppage time, chipping the ball over Lloris to complete a memorable victory.
The Netherlands must wish they could play every match at Feyenoord’s De Kuip stadium — the victory extended the Dutch run of wins there to 15.
A depleted France arrived in Rotterdam after injuries sidelined Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Benjamin Mendy, Thomas Lemar, Lucas Hernandez and Thomas Lemar.
Deschamps refused to use their absence as an excuse for his team’s lacklustre display.
"We had confidence in the players we had here," he said. "We lost to a Dutch team that played very well and we did not play well."
Elsewhere in the Nations League, Denmark beat Wales 2-1 in Cardiff to secure promotion from League B Group 4. Nicolai Jorgensen and Martin Braithwaite scored for the Danes before Gareth Bale hit a late consolation goal.
Slovakia beat Ukraine 4-1 in League B Group 1. Ukraine had already secured promotion before the match.

Claudio Ranieri is not the nice guy he appears to be and is just who Fulham need to beat the drop
THE last time Claudio Ranieri was appointed to a job in the Premier League, the reaction was disbelief and laughter.
Gary Lineker dismissed the Italian as “an uninspired choice”, Tony Cottee thought it was a “huge gamble” and Harry Redknapp added: “After what happened with Greece, I am surprised he can walk back into the Premier League.”

What happened next is a history that will never be forgotten, especially in Leicester.
The greatest, most remarkable and unexpected story, arguably of any era, certainly of this one.
And that is why Fulham’s decision to appoint the Italian, bringing him back to West London some 18 years since his first role in the SW postcode, will not attract any criticism.
Ranieri is not quite as nice as he comes across. If he was, he wouldn’t have survived more than three decades in club management, in four countries.

But Ranieri, as he proved at Leicester, knows how to get results. And that is what Fulham need.
The harsh reality is that Slavisa Jokanovic has simply not adapted to the Premier League.
His side have been wide open. Far too easy to score against.
Jokanovic’s inconsistent, seemingly ever-changing selection policy has not helped either.
And the one thing we know from his spell at the Foxes is that Ranieri will identify his first team, especially his back line, and ensure they are organised. That in itself should make a difference. A big one.

By Martin Lipton
FULHAM have sacked Slavisa Jokanovic after a disastrous run of six league defeats on the spin.
And the Serb has been replaced by former Chelsea and Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri.
The decision, taken by Cottagers owner Shahid Khan, comes with Fulham bottom of the Prem table after 12 matches.
Despite a £100million summer investment after their promotion through the play-offs last term, Fulham have struggled in the top flight.
If Fulham can learn to defend, properly, then their attacking talents can still prosper.
There are goals in the side, as long as they have a platform to leap off.
Over his serious managerial career, which started back in 1988 at Cagliari, Ranieri has won just over 45 per cent of his matches.
If he can match that at Fulham, it will bring 12 wins over the rest of this season. Add in the seven draws his career has averaged and that will be 43 additional points. More than enough.
Of course, it is not that easy. Every point in the Premier League has to be won.

Ranieri will have to work – for the next six weeks at least – with Jokanovic’s squad.
It is hard to believe Shahid Khan will allow him to spend a fortune in January without at least attempting to balance the books.
But the Fulham fans will expect that, with 10 days to get to know the bulk of his squad – one of the benefits of the international break – they will see a changed, focused and galvanised side against Southampton on November 24.

Thierry Henry’s struggling Monaco side loses at Reims

PARIS — Thierry Henry must be wondering what he signed up for as Monaco’s new coach.
After four matches, the France great has yet to win one, and his side is languishing in 19th place in the French league after losing at Reims 1-0.
Even with Colombia striker Radamel Falcao back from injury and coming off the bench for the entire second half, Monaco failed to score after Reims midfielder Alaixys Romao was sent off after 50 minutes. Monaco midfielder Pele was red-carded with 20 minutes left.
Monaco has seven points from 12 games and will drop to last place if Guingamp draws at Nantes on Sunday.
Henry has little to cheer him up, either.
Next weekend Monaco is at home to runaway leader Paris Saint-Germain, which has won its opening 12 games to set a European record for the top five leagues. PSG’s latest win was 2-1 at home against Lille on Friday.
Meanwhile, Lyon missed the chance to move into third place when it drew Bordeaux 1-1 at home, despite taking the lead through highly rated midfielder Houssem Aouar’s fourth goal of the season.
OTHER MATCHES:
While Henry is struggling to fix things at Monaco, his former France and Arsenal teammate Patrick Vieira is slowly getting things right at Nice.
A 1-0 win at home to Amiens moved his side up to ninth place, following a difficult start to the season.
In other games, it was: Caen 1, Rennes 2; Dijon 0, Nimes 4, and Strasbourg 1, Toulouse 1.
SUNDAY GAMES
Montpellier can move above Lille into second place on goal difference if it beats fifth-place Marseille by two goals.
If Marseille loses, Saint-Etienne can take fifth spot with a home win against Angers.

Moralez stars for NYCFC in MLS knockout round win over Union

NEW YORK — Maximiliano Moralez had two big assists on first-half goals and added a score of his own in the second half to help NYCFC advance out of the MLS knockout round with a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night.
Ismael Tajouri-Shradi and David Villa scored first-half goals and NYCFC moved forward to play second-seeded Atlanta United in a two-game Eastern Conference semifinal series, with the first game scheduled for Sunday in New York.
In the 10th minute, Moralez sent a pass forward that Villa flicked off his heel to Tajouri-Shradi, who turned it into a 22-yard line drive into the upper left-hand corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
On a counterattack following a turnover, Ronald Matarrita passed to Moralez charging down the left side. Moralez sent the ball to Villa, who slotted in his team-leading 15th goal of the season from just outside the penalty area in the 26th.
Moralez made it 3-0 in the 78th when he ran on to a long ball from Anton Tinnerholm and lobbed it over charging Union goalie Andre Blake from 12 yards.
Philadelphia avoided the shutout when Ilsinho sent a short pass into the middle of the 6-yard box for an easy goal by Cory Burke in the 83th.
NYCFC beat Philadelphia on the final day of the regular season Sunday, also by a 3-1 score.
