Quintero powers Minnesota United past Toronto FC

MINNEAPOLIS — Toronto FC seemingly can’t stop teams from scoring against them in the first half.

Darwin Quintero scored three times for the first hat trick in Minnesota United FC history, helping the Loons beat Toronto FC 4-3 on Wednesday night. Quintero’s first goal of the night came eight minutes into the match and Miguel Ibarra also scored for United in the 13th minute.

TFC has conceded 10 goals in the first 15 minutes of games this season, worst in Major League Soccer.

"We give balls away that we shouldn’t, we can’t make plays to put fires, we’re a little bit deep in moments. I can’t put a finger on it," said Toronto FC captain Michael Bradley. "There’s a lot of different reasons. You can look at each goal and ultimately talk your way through it ten different times. The frustrating part is that in so many games, we haven’t given ourselves a chance.

"We start the game down 1-0, down 2-0 too many times. You have to be able to play from behind in moments, but we have had to do it way too often this year."

Minnesota United (6-1-10) snapped a three-game losing streak that included a 1-0 loss to FC Dallas on Friday at TCF Bank Stadium.

Quintero got his first goal eight minutes into the match, splitting two defenders and firing into upper left corner for a 1-0 lead. His second goal, in the 52nd minute, was just off the fingertips of Toronto FC keeper Clint Irwin and his third came just five minutes later, bending in a shot from the left side, over Irwin’s fingertips and into the upper right corner.

Justin Morrow, Sebastian Giovinco and Jordan Hamilton had Toronto FC’s goals. Hamilton got the Reds (4-3-10) within one with just a minute left in stoppage time.

Toronto FC has conceded 34 goals at the midway point of this season. They gave up 37 goals the whole of last season, when they won their first-ever MLS title.

Asked if his team could still make the playoffs despite sitting 10th in the Eastern Conference Bradley was terse.

"Absolutely."

Where is Eric Dier from, who does he play for and does he usually take penalties?

ERIC DIER shot himself into World Cup folklore with England’s winning penalty in the sudden death shootout with Colombia.

The 24-year-old midfielder scored from the spot after Jordan Pickford denied Carlos Bacca to send England through after the teams had drawn 1-1 after extra time.

Gareth Southgate’s men now face Switzerland at the Samara Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Dier was an 81st minute substitute for Dele Alli.

He actually sent a free header wide that would have put the Three Lions 2-0 up and then watched in agony as Colombia snatched a late equaliser.

But how he atoned for his miss.

FROM RUSSIA WITH LIVE All the latest action, news, goals and gossip from the World Cup Tell me, where is Eric Dier from?

Dier is the grandson of Ted Croker, the former secretary of the FA and president of Cheltenham Town.

He grew up in Gloucestershire and moved with his family to Portugal aged seven.

His mum had been offered a job at the UEFA Euro 2004 championships and afterwards they stayed put.

His parents actually came back to England in 2010 but Dier remained and was based at the Sporting CP academy.

This is what Dier’s teammates thought about his sudden death heroicsGetty Images - Getty Which team does Dier play for?

Dier signed on as a pro with Sporting CP and in 2014 moved to Tottenham Hotspur for £4million.

So far he has made 172 stars in all competitions for Spurs and scored eight goals.

When did he make his England debut?

Roy Hodgson gave Dier his first England start against Spain in 2015.

Just as it happened against Colombia he came on as substitute for Tottenham teammate Alli.

Last November he captained England against Germany at Wembley.

Is Eric Dier a regular penalty taker?

No. In fact, those seven goals for Tottenham all stemmed from regular play – three headers, three right-footed shots and one with the left.

His Tottenham shooting accuracy is 24 per cent… but he managed to hit one right where he wanted to when it mattered most in Moscow on Tuesday night.
